WHAT I’M WORKING ON IN 2017
“What are you working on?” is my favourite conversation starter. I’m always fascinated by what other people are interested in. Over the holiday season I try to reflect on the previous year and set some intentions for the year ahead. It helps me feel accomplished even though time passes by so quickly, and to visualize the goals I want to achieve. It also prepares me for when someone else asks me what I’m working on in the year ahead! Here’s a brief overview of what I did in 2016, what I’m planning in 2017, the tools I’m using to make those goals achievable, and a call out for help on some research I’d like to contribute to.
The naturopathic medical profession in Ontario has gone through many changes since proclamation of the Naturopathy Act on July 1, 2015. Naturopathic doctors are now licensed under the Regulated Heath Professionals Act (RHPA), just like MDs. Part of what that meant for me in 2016 was completing new Continuing Education requirements.
Some of the courses I got to take last year included:
Naturopathic Management of ADHD
Autoimmunity & Environmental Toxicants
Botanical IBS Formulations
Natural Health Products & Drug Interactions
Food & Drug Pharmacokinetics
2017 is all about continuing education that’s focused around my professional passion projects, rather than on fulfilling my College’s requirements.
The first program I registered for was Dr. Sat Dharam Kaur’s HEALTHY BREAST Practitioner’s Program.
The other comprehensive course I registered for this year is Dr. Walter Crinnion’s ENVIRONMENTAL MEDICINE Physician Training I first took several years ago. As a past participant, I’m able to audit the course to update my information. Which is important in an area that is constantly being researched!
WHY AM I TAKING THESE COURSES?
The Environmental Medicine program explores the sources of exposure to environmental chemical toxicity, how the natural progression of chemical overload may be affecting your health, selection and interpretation of relevant lab tests and treatment options.
Through the Healthy Breast Program I’m learning how to help women both prevent and treat breast cancer with evidence-based diet, nutritional supplementation, botanical medicine, acupuncture, detoxification strategies, immune building regimens and hormone balancing protocols.
My goals this year are to convert the physician trainings into understandable actionable programs for my patients and the public. By the end of this year, I hope to have resources available for you on my website from downloadable tip sheets, to webinars, to workbooks complete with recipes.
To my surprise, another goal that is taking shape over the course of the Healthy Breast training is the desire to take part in research to provide evidence for naturopathic strategies to improve Fibrocystic Breast Disease. If you (or anyone you know) have lumpy, tender, or dense breasts, please contact me so we can get a study together!
I don’t know about you, but my inbox/social media feed has been full of advice on How to Actually Keep your New Year’s Resolutions. This is really important, because many of us lose focus despite the best intentions. My yoga class has already shrunk considerably since the beginning of January!
Some themes that were repeated often in my threads were:
- Be Specific about what you want to achieve.
- Create a Plan to help you break down your goals into achievable steps.
- Prioritize time in your schedule.
- Involve others; buddy up with a partner to keep yourself accountable.
- Check in from time to time; achieving goals requires constant re-evaluation & adjustments to your plan.
Because I have so much going on professionally, but my family life is my priority, I ordered some Goal Calendars from Etsy to help me manage my time. These ones include 30 pages of Big, Bold, B&W, Simple graphics. You can choose from Yearly, Monthly, Shopping, Goals, Lists, & Chore charts. This one features printable worksheets; Monthly Checklists with Goals for this Month & Important Dates.
I know that there are many great time management apps out there, but they haven’t worked for me. I find that having something visible and tangible for the whole family to be able to access and edit really helps keep us all on the same page. Literally and figuratively. I used clipboards and picture ledges to create a wall of dream manifestation.
I also downloaded these ones because I just loved the theme page:
